Take a look into the future of home building with author Sheri Koones as she explores America's fastest-growing method of home construction.
In Modular Mansions, Koones profiles twenty-one modular houses in varied styles, ranging from 1,344 to 12,700 square feet, including an Arts & Crafts House on Lake Orange, a canyon view log home, a colonial on the lake, Victorian nostalgia in New England, and more, in locations across the country.
Modular homes have become significantly more sophisticated, with beautiful, spacious designs that rival the size and quality of many custom stick-built homes. Modular Mansions showcases this amazing assortment of dream homes that highlight the benefits and details of modular craftsmanship.
With the dwindling population of craftsmen, the sophistication of available equipment, and the added desire of so many for faster construction solutions, modular construction is bound to be the future's primary method of homebuilding.
Sheri Koones began writing about home construction after doing extensive research to complete the renovation of her own home several years ago. She found a niche in empowering other homeowners to become more knowledgeable about completing their own construction projects. Sheri's other books include From Sand Castles to Dream Houses and House About It. She is also a columnist and freelance writer, and resides in Connecticut.
down a prarie road
This summer I visited my aunt and uncles farm where i had not been in too many years and yet on the road and in my heart is it a homecoming. My uncle and aunt have been married for fifty seven years next month, each having milestone birthdays of eighty years in 2009. yesterday the house they have lived in since their wedding burned to ruin. Everyone got safely outside. My aunt is a somewhat famous and more importantly amazing painter who has spent much of her life on recording in realism rarely still practiced, her loving view of her prairie home. Her painting literaly cover the globe but many, irreplaceable pieces hang on the modest walls of her farmhouse. My uncle is an avid photographer and camera collector and has been as well the family archivist with family photos and memoribila from the past hundred years. My cousin called last night, a few hours after the fire when my aunt and uncle had been relocated in a family home, when the firetrucks have left the yard and so much else behind. To thier amazing good fortune they had two tankers water full and a neighbor two more or there would be nothing left but ashes as the firetrucks ran out of water early on, clearly no hydrants on distant farmlands. My cousin pulled paintings he could reach, his grandfathers rocking chair, a doctors bag from a great grandpa, and left behind everything else when the firemen said simply no more. He had gone to the top floor in a desperate attempt to retrieve a box of very very old photos from the grandparents house and when he reached the place he knew it was stored it wasn't there, hours later through a hole on the west wall, he saw the box for the most part undamaged and it was his gift of grace on a horrible day. I feel, half the country away, somehow without shelter. My aunts paintings, detailed beyond imagining, brush stoke by stroke in oils and egg tempera built blade of grass and wheat one by one to make the kinds of paintings above. But, everything she does is art, the way she sets the table, arranges flowers, picks just the right things to make the ordiary acts of life beautiful, those things have been challenged by mobility and now this new huge loss. They are however, made of strength and acceptance and while being transported to a home not their own, were building a plan for a modular home they hope to be in before winter. And so, as it always does on the farm, life continues, one goes with the flow as there is no other acceptable choice. In the far and away, I imagine their day beginning without their own chairs or cups and again i feel smaller and less solid.
